ACADEMIC TEXT IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE:AN OVERVIEW OF CURRENT RESEARCH

The article discusses the current comparative research of an academic text. Such an overview is determined by the necessity of summarizing the research results on ethno-cultural identity which is revealed in the academic text written national authors. These finding will contribute to the elimination of communicative barriers in the international academic communication. The review covers 30 research papers representing comparative studies performed between 1990 and 2022. The findings were described, analyzed and compared. The comparative research of the academic text involves various academic genres including essays, reports, lectures, research papers, theses.  The current trend shows a wider range of languages and cultures involved in the comparative analysis. However, the English language and culture remains a constant element in the comparison pair. The findings of the comparative research are based on a wide spectrum of parameters which are as follows:  text structure and organization, text length, moves, their pattern and consequence, metadiscourse markers, engagement and persuasion markers, author stance, hedges and boosters. The analysis of the research findings proves the fact that the academic text presents specific characteristics determined by the ethno-cultural identity of the author. Comparative analysis is a relevant method for the detection of the ethno-cultural characteristics in the academic text which can be attributed to the national accent of the author. The awareness of linguistic and cultural features that the academic text bears can contribute to the elimination of the national academic accent in the global academic discourse.
