TRANSLATION OF THE UNTRANSLATABLE: SECONDARY TEXT AS PASTICHE AND HOMAGE

The article addresses some creative aspects of overcoming the difficulties that arise when creating secondary versions of significant but initially difficult to translate texts of world literature. The study examines some cases secondary versions creation of a “strong” text of English imaginative literature, which traditionally finds it extremely difficult to comprehend its meaning and, accordingly, to transmit by means of other language systems. The main research methods were comparative, structural and descriptive, as well as observation and analysis of scientific papers and critical reviews, which corresponds to a complementary approach to the problems considered in the article.  The hermeneutical approach is mainly applied in description and prescription tracks. The material of the analysis undertaken was the novel by J. Joyce “Finnegans Wake” and Translation Studies discourse related to the history of its foreign language translations creation. In addition to the three Jakobsonian types of translation distinguished in accordance with the semiotic nature of secondary versions of a verbal original, the concepts of homage translation and pastiche translation are used in the present study, which implies an emotional and evaluative interpretation of an original text by its translator, which results in the appearance of a transtext – a variation on the theme of a source text created in the process of its reinterpretation and revision. The usage of the concepts of homage and pastiche allows to complement the categorical paradigm of Literary Translation Studies and to expand the limits of translatability and translatedness of a priori semantically and semiotically challenging original text.
