LINGUISTIC TECHNIQUES OF SPEECH MANIPULATION OF THE ADDRESSEE IN A LITERARY TEXT (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF E.T.A. HOFFMAN’S SHORT STORY “THE SANDMAN”

The article is devoted to the analysis of the techniques of speech manipulation and the peculiarities of its actualization in a literary text that are not identical to manipulation in political or advertising discourse. The methodology of the work is based on linguistic methods of contextual, interpretive and statistical analysis. The corpus of research on speech manipulation techniques is limited to the text of the short story "The Sandman" by E.T.A. Hoffman, since their use is conditioned by the specific content of the literary work and the choice of linguistic means in order to achieve a certain pragmatic effect when influencing the addressee. In the text of T. A. Hoffman, the means and methods of creating an illusion when perceiving the content of the novel are revealed, directing the recipient's attention towards an unjustified version of the development of events. As a result of the formation of an erroneous idea about the course of the narrative, the effect of violated expectations arises, which the reader could avoid by carefully reading the text and understanding how the author manipulates his perception. Studies of this kind indicate that speech manipulation is not a recent invention and has long occupied a certain place in the process of creating a text. The specifics of its actualization depend on the type of text and the pragmatic attitude of its author. The text of E.T.A. Hoffman can serve as a source of information about which language means speech manipulation is created and what effect can be achieved as a result of its use.
